The Philippine Science High School – Central Luzon Campus Elective Program in Mandarin Chinese aims to develop basic competence in communication through eclectic foreign language learning designs. These approaches facilitate the development of fundamental communication skills and strategies for using Chinese in practical contexts. Among the main learning points of the course are phonetics, simplified Chinese script, vocabulary, and grammar. These linguistic components are integrated into thematic subject contents such as navigating daily life, building connections with others, and assuming roles in select social contexts. Furthermore, students are immersed in textual, visual, digital, and simulated content. Through an integrative scheme in learning Chinese as a foreign language, students achieve at least an A1 Level in the Common European Reference Framework or Levels 1 and 2 in the Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (Chinese Proficiency Test). Both proficiency frameworks are guided by benchmarks for various levels of proficiency. In the abovementioned levels, users possess the basic receptive and productive macro skills for simple and concrete transactions. Lastly, the introductory course also equips scholars with keen cultural and global awareness, whose appreciation for the target language and culture propels them to pursue opportunities related to science, technology, mathematics, and the humanities in Chinese-speaking environments.
